The Driving Program gives refugees the opportunity to gain their license as quickly as possible and enable them to become independent, qualified drivers on Victorian roads.

The Driving Programs help create awareness about Victorian road laws and traffic regulations among newly arrived refugees, improve newly-arrived refugees’ understanding of the role of the Police in Australia, and empower new drivers with confidence, skills and knowledge to drive.

The Program identifies, and then helps you to:

• increase your understanding of Australian roads laws
• obtain your driver’s licence quickly
• become a safer driver on the road
• increase your prospects and job opportunities
• increase your participation in community activities.

It has been identified that obtaining a driver’s licence is a key priority among refugee and migrant groups. This program will support participants to achieve their goal of gaining their licence, in turn opening up more social opportunities such as employment and community participation.

The Driving Program consists of six information sessions. It provides up to 30 professional driving lessons to all eligible clients and supports them throughout the process of obtaining their driver’s license. The six information sessions include information regarding:

• understanding roads laws
• fines and learning what to do
• how to get insurance and understand its importance
• understanding how to purchase a car.

The Driving Program is supported by funding from the Australian Government through the Department of Social Services under the Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS) Program
